Name one character in your book who would be considered a dynamic character. How does this character change?

: A dynamic character in this story is Fanny's father Henry. Henry goes from being a stubborn baby in the beginning of the book to an understanding caring person. At the start of this book he hated dogs so much and wouldn't give them a chance just because he didn't like that fact that when they are babys they whine sometimes. In the middle of the story He lets Fanny get a dog. Henry doesn't like the dog, but instead of shoving it ouw the door and getting rid of it like he did the first one, he changes to become to like the dog and work around his problems of having a dog around. Thats why I chose Henry as my dynamic character.

PM-5

Compare and contrast a character in your book to yourself. How are you alike? How are you different? Would you act the same way as this character? Why or why not?

: The main character in the book and I have many traits and interests that are different from each other but then on the other hand we do have some common interests and traits. Fanny is a really laid back person. She centers her world around things that I really wouldn't and don't center mine around. We both share an interest in animals, the only difference is that my favorite is horses and her favorite is dogs. Fanny lets little things dwell on her and doesn't want to let anything go thats not important. Fanny is an only child and I am not. No I would not want to act the same way as Fanny because she seems too boring. I like more adventures or haveing some fun laughing when its appropriate instead of trying to think about something to cry about.

PM-4

Quote 1: "See, there's no father Kangaroo. That's why it's my favorite cup. And that's why it says 'love and happiness.'" - This quote was said by Fanny to her father when she got really angry at him one night. The night this took place was the night that Fanny's father gave away her dog. She was so upset drinking out of her kangaroo cup that had a mom and baby kangaroo on it. She made a point of letting her dad know that the dad kangaroo is not needed to raise the baby. In a way that was a way of expressing her anger towards her dad. This Quote is a good example of the little fights Fanny and her father get into.

Quote 2: "I'm only up for one kind. Every year they bake cookies together and many different kinds and always too many. This year is many different such as Fanny's father is gone, her dog is gone, and they are only bakine one kind of cookies and not as much as the usual.

PM-3

The character that seemed the most interesting to me was Fanny's mom Ellen. She is always so nice and tries to make things right even when they seem really bad. She seems like a really nice mom to have. Ellen actually wants to spend time with Fanny and her husband instead of ignoring them to do something else. Ellen is weird too like how she was sucking helium with her daughter laughing about it. I don't know many parents who encourage thier kids to suck helium. Althought Ellen isn't the main character in this novel I chose her as the most interesting character so far. The main character Fanny doesn't sound too interesting so far.

PM-2

It is Fanny's dad's birthday and he is 61 years old. He gets upset about becoming the age 61 and having another birthday party that he 'runs away'. Ellen ( his wife) and Fanny ( his daughter) have to cancel his party. They waited for a long time for him to come home and tried calling but couldn't see any sign of him. Fanny cries and blames herself for him being gone because she called him gramps. Ellen and Fanny decide to go to a movie and the park and see what happens when they come home. When they come home Fanny notices that the lights were turned on. She got so excited and searched the whole house for him but he was nowhere to be found. Ellen found a note on the counter that he had left for them. It said that he was going out to their cabin and that he needed some time to himself. He had left some presents for them under the tree because it was around christmas time and said that he would be back tomorrow and have more presents and whatnot. They went and opened their presents afterwards and then with the balloons he left them, they sucked out the helium. Ellen and Fanny say around laughing at the sounds of thier voices. Fanny's present happened to be a statue of a dog; she believes that this is a hint that her dad might give her dog back to her. Ellen tells her not to get her hopes up though because her dad hated the dog. That night Fanny and her mother decide to sleep on their fouton bed and make the fire big.

Protecting Marie-1

Title: Protecting Marie
Author: Kevin Henkes
Pages: 195
Publisher & Copyright: Scholastic inc., 1995 by Kevin Henkes
Why did I select this novel?: I selected this novel because I have seen it laying around for a while and finally decided to try it out.
What clues did I get from the cover?: I thought this book was going to be about a girl and her dog because on the cover they have a picture of a girl laying with her dog. He is a real man of the land in words to say. He is part Apache so he knows the old Indian ways of living off the land. He knows no place as his home and plans not to. He likes the life of living on the range. Hondo believes in moral rights and doing the right thing. Over time he has come to see that he really does have feelings for a Mrs. Lowe and her son Johnny. He wants to call her home his home, whereas before he didn't really care to settle with anyone.

This novel is about a man named Hondo Lane riding across the western parts of the United States and doing dispatch reports on concerns of the towns people. He goes out and dispatches on the attacks of the apaches and the land and what is on it. He ends up finding a married woman that he ends up falling for. Her husband is too lazy to work the farm so he runs away and never came back to them. In the end there is a compromise to all the apache attacks that go on in the novel.

This story takes place back in the 'old western days' where it was leagal to kill and get away with it. It is around the western area of the United States, mostly in Arizona area. Most of the scenes are in the deserts where hondo tells of how one can live off the land in the desert with no worries. In this era there was a lot of battling with the Indians. In this story the Apaches were the main tribe that they were battling with.

The climax of this story happens I would say when Angie Lowe comes out of her house to see it completely surrounded by Apaches including the chief. They tell her that she was warned to leave and she wouldn't listen therefore she would have to pay the consequence. She was no coward to back off from them and let them have the land. She boldly told them that it was her land given to her by her family who had it before. When one tried to come get her, her 4 year old son grabbed a gun and shot the man. At first one doesn't know what was going to happen. Would the Indians kill them then? But they didn't; for that reason the chief let Angie and her son stay on the land. The chief Vittoro, said for her to have raised such a strong kid that she must be worthy to live there. They made a compromise and agreed that Angie can stay there. Afterwards they made her chose a husband to be a father figure for Johnny and he had to learn the Apache ways too.

The author of this book is a cowboy who has written many westerns before. He tries to give you an image of what life really was like back in 'the old west'. Through his stories its almost as if you can relate to most of them. He really only wrote this book to add to his collection of novels teaching you of how life was back then. And how it was in the different areas.

I rate this story on a scale of 1-10 as an 8. Yes it is a good story, but it can get confusing. One chapter it will talk about one thing and the other another thing. At some points the story can get so intense that you don't want to stop reading because you want to know what is going to happen. Others you can't wait to stop reading because they tell about something you could careless about. This book and others written by the author if this one i recommend to read because it teaches you alot of how people lived back then. It helps you to understand the hard work they did and the battles and compromises. I would have to say it is more rugged back then.

Hondo-6

I came over the hill on my horse with my other Apache warriors. There stood Angie Lowe. I had warned her before to leave while she could. This was Apache land, not meant for white people. Let alone a white woman with no husband to protect the property; and I told her of this. She just replied that this spring was her's. Angie said that she wouldn't leave and that Apache's didn't need this one. She tried to compromise in a way of saying that the Apaches were welcome to use the spring to water themselves and their horses when in the area and need of water. But still, i and my warriors disagreed with her. Silva came up to me and compared my palomino horse's mane to the color of Angies. Her scalp i would have to say would match the color of Angies long blonde hair. As Silva walked toward Angie, she stood there as not afraid of defeat. Just as Silva got there, Angies son Johnny stood there with a gun. Silva just laughed, he didn't think the little kid knew how to work the gun. Silva was wrong about the boy. Johnny pulled the trigger and got him in the head. After i agreed to let Angie say there and keep that as her home. She was a strong woman and brought up a strong child without the presence of a man.

Hondo-5

The setting of this novel takes place in the western areas of the U.S. back in the 'old west days'. The main place though is in the desert areas around Arizona and New Mexico. Mostly there are no villages mentioned except for Indian ones. The author throughout this novel uses sense of place with the details of the desert life forms such as the animals. The author gives detail of how the desert affects the body and mind. And also about the plant life . One Significant place in this novel is the farm that Hondo comes upon that belongs to Mrs.Lowe. Hondo stays there a few times throughout the novel and becomes knowing it as home. Throughout this book Hondo has no known home. He just goes off and goes where ever the trail takes him with his dispatches. It was a major battle in the west in a desert. Almost all the Apaches in the west were gathering to ambush the U.S. army. He is traveling along with his horse and a dog. Apache Indians end up killing his horse and he goes on to find a woman alone of her farm with her son. The woman tells him that her husband is gone on a cattle drive. He notices that her farm is not kept up too well. For example her axe hasn't been sharpened for the longest time, horses haven't been shoed in ages, etc. Hondo helps her out and she ends up giving him one of their horses of his choice. He chooses the most wild horse there and tames it. It wasn't easy but Hondo seemed to have a way with this horse tha nobody else wanted to deal with. Shortly Hondo figures out the woman is lieing about her husband going to be back soon. She admits hes right and realizes he brings out the 'woman' in her. Hondo refeuses to let her or her son feed the dog because he says the dog is independent. The little boy asks to pet the dog, Hondo said he bites, but the boy pet the dog anyways. The dog tried to bite the boy. The woman got upset about it and said that if Hondo knew the dog bites why didn't he stop the boy. Hondo only replied saying that it makes the boy a stronger and smarter person. She now is really starting to like the presents of Hondo and thinks of him as a respectable person. Hondo tries to make her and her son leave with him because he said that Apches could attack at any time. The lady ( Mrs.Lowe) refuses to leave because she said they were at peace with the Apaches and that she was born and raised there. Hondo then brings it to her attention that the treaty was broken shortly before he arrived. Mrs. Lowe now debates wheather to leave or not.

Hondo-3

I think the most interesting character of this book is the main character Hondo Lane. Hondo has the patience and skill of a true western man. When Mrs.Lowe tells Hondo that the horse he picked was the most wild one that only brought excitement to him. He says that a horse with now spunk is liable to let you down. He reminds me of myself with his interest in horses. He thinks the best way to learn a lesson in life is to learn from a mistake. Like when the dog bit the boy he said it would only make the boy smarter and stronger. Although Hondo is alone at this farm with a woman and her child he doesn't take advantage of this. Hondo says that Indians can smell white people. He said that he is part indian and that when Mrs. Lowe is around he can smell her because she is a white person. He also teaches the dog to smell indians by having an indian beat the dog with a stick. Hondo just has a interesting personlity. He is a firm believer in an eye for and eye though.

Hondo

Title of Book: Hondo
Author: Louis L'amour
Pages: 179
Publisher : Bantam
Copy right: 1953 by Louis L'amour
I selected this book why?: This book is a western and i'm a crazy cowgirl into that sort of thing. The guy on the cover looked and reminded me of myself at times ( just kidding but seriously)

What clues from the cover did i get?: The guy on the cover is in the middle of the desert.
